Sunday Sundae: not your typical village

Village Creamery is an ice cream stand in a near north Chicago suburb (Niles). Sure, sure. Probably the usual vanilla-only, root-beer-float-if-you’re-lucky situation, right? Of course, yes. Let’s go after little league and get some soft-serve. I’m all ready to give my chocolate soft serve/butterscotch dip top order with fingers crossed, as per usual. BUT WAIT. What to my wondering eyes should appear? Filipino dreams come true with lychee and macapuno ice creams, and hello hello, a halo halo sundae.

I mean, what’s better than a bowl of shaved ice on a scorching summer day? Round it out with flan, homemade Thai tea and sapin-sapin ice creams, and the Filipino kitchen sink selection of toppings. Coulda shoulda put it on a bubble waffle, but as I’d just polished off some sushi and Korean dumplings at H Mart across the street, I was a tad full. Next visit order: banana split atop a bubble waffle with scoops of red bean, ube and mango. Next visit date: ASAP.

Pretty Cool is super awesome

Hi hi hi!!!!! Just so you know, once the zoning permit goes through I’ll be moving into an apartment upstairs from Pretty Cool Ice Cream so that I won’t have to cry myself to sleep each time I miss a new collab or, you know, just miss eating an ice cream bar in general.

Love the ice cream truck? Who doesn’t?! But not totally nostalgic for the fakeyfake flavors? Who is?! Pretty Cool has you covered with truck pops like Concord grape, sour cherry or fire cracker.

Wish you were on a beach? P.C. got you again with their passion fruit or mango lassi buttermilk bars.

Want ice cream but also pie?? Yeah, duh. Get one of their Bang Bang piecicle bars like strawberry rhubarb or key lime or banana cream.

Are you 5 years old and want your own pop but will get bored in 3 min and/or plan to drop it on the floor? The pony pop is the pop for you, and you can pick pink lemonade, chocolate custard, cider, strawberry buttermilk, vanilla or grape. SO MANT CHOICES.

Not feeling fruity but feeling fancy? How about s’mores or rainbow chip or horchata crunch or coffee pretzel toffee or peanut butter potato chip or caramel cake or orange confetti or or or or………

EVERYTHING IS GOOD. The wrapper art is good. The wall art is good. The magnet letter wall and wooden bleachers are good insure that everyone is occupado and able to eat their treat in relative peace.

Like I said, I’m moving in ASAP and my doors will be open until 10pm each night.

land of milk and honey

Unless you live in Vernon Hills, Vernon Hills is not close. Nor does it have hills (quick Chi suburb tricky name lesson here). But some days the stars and sun rays align and *someone* can finally have honey and that same someone needs a nap but doesn’t know it, so a DRIVE is in order with destination: Milkcow.

Soft serve milk ice cream drizzled with honey and topped with chunks of honeycomb. Smooth and refreshing with hits of honey. They also have a cookies and cream version (for a next level milk and cookies fix), and can do a towering affogato. Delicious for an adult and probably mind-blowing for a 1 year old…. I’m guessing like a bottle on steroids??

*Extra points for having a sink in the dining area – to rinse/recycle your cup and/or to wash any sticky fingers.

Pie Cone: the future of à la mode

For when you can’t quite decide between ice cream or pie (and for whatever excuse aren’t just solving this common dilemma by getting both): PIE CONE.

Spinning J‘s flaky, buttery, sugared pie dough rolled and baked into a cone shape, topped with your choice of Black Dog Gelato flavors including blackberry passion fruit and strawberry rhubarb sorbet (pictured above), vanilla bean, Mexican chocolate, Oreo mint, cherry chocolate chip, or chocolate sorbet.

Ingenious.

Sunday Sundae: national day history mystery edition

As if the sweltering summer heat wasn’t a good enough excuse to drown yourself in ice cream, July is National Ice Cream Month. And if you didn’t already know that, what better day to learn than today, National Ice Cream Day!

As much as I’d like to take credit for making up this glorious holiday and basically extending it for 1/12 of the YEAR, the Nobel Prize goes to desserty prez Ronnie Reagan, who in 1984 took a break from pounding jelly beans and proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month, further driving it home by establishing the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. #justsayyes

Which brings us to today’s mystery: what did I just eat? Unable to decide, but definitely leaning chocolate for today’s observance, I had a turtle sundae with a nice foundation scoop of dark dark chocolate topped with a scoop of Agatha Christie from the newly opened Red Bicycle Ice Cream. The Agatha Christie is an ever-changing mysterious mélange of all the flavors, so you never know quite what you’ll taste. Thankfully, I did not come across arsenic or gun powder, but rather cookies and cream, rocky road, chocolate chip, and a hint of mint. (alas, no Poirot crème de cassis)

Dear Dessert Oasis,
Your recent posting about your yummy cross country road trip bakery stop in Lincoln, NE made me think I should do some advance planning for my own upcoming road trip. Any tips on wish list dessert stops between Chicago-Cleveland-Finger Lakes region, NY-Montreal-Quebec City- Toronto-and back to Chicago (via Michigan)? Whew! It’ll be a long adventure and we could use some delicious car snacks.

Dear Road Trippin’,
Having a few known dessert stops on your map will definitely save you from an overload of gas station candy bars and hot pockets – way to think ahead!! That being said, it can be tricky to find great stop offs that don’t veer too far away from the beaten path. (like, unfortch, much of the Ohio turnpike is a bland stretch of oasis pits.)
And so, I’ve outlined a few standouts near each of your destinations, and recommend you stock up as you approach/leave each locale. Be sure to bring a cooler, some extra tupperware, and a roll of paper towels!

If you live in LA, you know it’s only an hour to the beach/an hour to the mountains/an hour to the desert….. Get ready, because now, in much less than an hour, you can travel to destination: ANYWHERE (time reference: you can now travel the globe more quickly than it takes to cross under the 405 at 5pm). All you need to do is get yourself to Wanderlust Creamery.

Once there, if you know where you’re going, coolcool, pick a cone and a scoop and get on with it. But if instead you’re feeling a little lost or undecided, a little adventurous, a little filled with…. shall we say….WANDERLUST, that cashier’s counter turns into a travel agent’s desk and for a mere $30 you can book a Flight Around The World!

Some decisions will still need to be made. Wanderlust offers around 20 different flavors inspired by places the owners have been/want to go. Since the flight is made up of ONLY fourteen gold ball-sized scoops, you’ll have to say bon voyage to a few. On this latest tour I skipped Earl Grey (bc I can make that myself), Pineapple Li Hing Sorbet (bc I’m allergic to pineapple and not looking to die before the world tour even begins), Wanderlust Vanilla (bc you all know how I feel about vanilla – I don’t. I don’t feel about vanilla.), and Kinder Bueno (bc it of course is bueno, but I can also just go buy a Kinder Bueno).

So where did I go on my flight?

I started in Thailand with a Thai Iced Tea
then I headed over to Italy for Balsamic Macerated Strawberry Sorbet
to the Philipines for Ube Malted Crunch
next to Spain for a quick Catalonian afterschool snack of Pa Amb Xocolata (baguette spread with dark chocolate and drizzled with olive oil and sea salt)
Mexico for Cuatro Leches (why stop at tres??)
South America for a Tonka Bean Latte
Provence for some Honey Lavender (and a quick roll in the lavender fields)
met Björk at her house in Iceland for Pretzel & Rugbraud (rye bread)
then back to Thailand for Sticky Rice Mango
back to the Mediterranean for Fig Leaf & Pistachio (didn’t need to stop in 1000 churches or visit any headless sculptures!)
back to Mexico for Abuelita Malted Crunch
over to Japan for a Sakura Latte (since I missed cherry blossom season while I was hanging out in Iceland and Mexico and Italy), as well as Japanese Neapolitan (made with matcha, hojicha, and black sesame layers)
reentering the USA via the Pacific Northwest‘s Smoky Road – home sweet smoky marshmallow home…..

Luckily, my tour group was filled with enthusiastic explorers each preferring different cultural flavors, so the threat of an ice cream war was thwarted. #icecreamforworldpeace #icecreamforpresident
