Whenever I’m asked where to stop for donuts in Chicago, Do-Rite Donuts (one of my most favorite donut shops EVER) is at the top of my list. And what do I recommend getting? 1: something old fashioned. 2: the maple bacon cruller – if you are lucky enough to stop in on a day they have it. 3: whatever they have as their current collab.
For about the past year, Do-Rite has been collaborating with famous pals to bring different donut creations inspired by their co-conspirators. It all began with the “Sweet Heat” – a maple old fashioned donut topped with candied Fresno chilies and imagined by Noelle Scaggs of Fitz and the Tantrums. Every collab special is in the shops for a few weeks at a time, so it keeps you on your toes, but doesn’t keep you anxiously running for new flavors on a daily basis. (thank god)
Several collabs are foodie assists. For instance, the perfectly balanced tangy/sweet/brioch-y Strawberry Rhubarb Bullseye was concocted by Top Chef alum CJ Jacobson (maybe this is still happening? maybe you should find out asap and get a dozen), while the spicy/cream cheesy Pumpkin Overlord was created by chef Andrew Carmellini:
Other collabs are Chicago-based. The Bourbon Glaze Pecan Pie was an assist by Chicago’s own Bang Bang Pie, while the German Chocolate Cake donut was inspired by WGN personality Dane Neal‘s fave childhood cake:
PS RIP: I’m sad to have missed the Double Dark Chocolate Cherry and Hibiscus Bullseye (wut!) imagined by Rapha Cycling, and the classic Black & White by Infatuation Chi (look to the donut!) due to substandard donut devouring scheduling on my part. The “missed list” goes on, but so does the “hasn’t happened yet list,” so I’m not too worried….
