Facts about Graeter’s Ice Cream:
- They are graet. Ha!
- Their few actual shops are based in the Midwest: Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, with one location in Illinois and one location in Pennsylvania. But a whole bunch of grocery stores carry their pints, and they’ll ship to you too! #blessed
- Ok, so now that you have a reason to read on even if you don’t live in the Midwest….. what makes Graeter’s stand out in the world aisle of ice creams? They use a French Pot process. Huh?? This means that they’ve been using the same old-timey process for over a century, creating only 2 gallons of ice cream at a time. ONLY 2 GALLONS AT A TIME!!! No big ol’ factory assembly squirt conveyor belt. Just 2 baby gallons made at a time and then hand packed into pints. The love…..
- Blah blah places, pots, ice cream, schmice cream, time for the headline: FAMOUS CHOCOLATE CHIPS!!!! Graeter’s pours chocolate over the ice cream base and then “ice cream artisans” break it up and hand-mix the pieces into the batch. I feel like they’re pretty tired after stirring day in and day out, and hence they probs just give it a one two whisk and put a lid on it. So what do we get? HUGE chunks of chocolate! And not break-your-teeth-hard-too-cold-to-even-taste chocolate. These celeb-status chips are smooth and dark and melty and blend in with whatever flavor you’ve chosen. (pictured above: chip in the bourbon pecan, chips in the black raspberry…..chips/chunks/who am I to argue??)
(side note/reason to visit the Midwest: they have rotating seasonal flavors – fresh strawberry chip! – and some flavors that can really only be found at scoop shops – chocolate coconut almond chocolate chip!)
(side side note: I made an amateur error and ate lunch before visiting Graeter’s…. so dumb, I know. And hence only a single scoop. Please learn from my mistake and go on an empty stomach so you can order at least a double.)
